It is typical for the average child to catch a cold anywhere between 8 and 10 times over the course of a year. Treating the cold in a child is different from treating the cold in an adult, since symptoms vary in children. Though there is no cure for the common cold, there are ways to reduce the discomfort and to help alleviate the illness so your child may be back to normal in no time. There are factors that you must bear in mind when treating your child in order for the treatment to be effective.

Medication

Since the cold will affect your child in a different way than it would you, you should only give medication prescribed specifically for children. Make sure that the medication is meant for the symptoms specific to your child’s cold. It is always best to treat one symptom at a time, so if he or she only has a runny nose, there is no need to treat for a cough as well. Also, ensure that you consult a doctor about the correct dosage for your child’s age and weight.

Fever

When your child has the cold, it is always advised that you check the child’s temperature \r\nin order to know if they have a fever. A fever along in addition to the common cold is more frequently seen in children than it is in adults. If you observe that the fever is continuing for more than three days, you should see a doctor to avoid the development of a more serious condition.

Fluids

Having your child drink lots of fluids is one of the best ways to treat a cold. Ensure that your child has a high daily fluid intake but be sure to avoid sugary or carbonated beverages. Electrolyte drinks is a great option for the replacement of nutrients that have been lost due to the illness. This is especially beneficial when your child is not eating well. Do not replace more than half the fluids with these drinks, however.

Rest

When your child has the cold, it is always best to keep him or her away from regular activities. This will include day care, school or the playground. This is particularly important \r\nwhen your child is running a fever. It is at this point when children are most contagious and run the risk of spreading the illness. While at home, ensure that your child gets a lot of rest. There is no need to have a complete discontinuation of activities as long as they are getting sufficient rest.

When children have the cold, special consideration should be given to them. They require more attention and care than adults. If you pay attention to your child’s symptoms and complaints, you will most likely be able to treat the cold more effectively.. This will help to reduce the duration of the illness as it speeds recovery along.
